Working with wood is really fun for kids but it also has some other benefits that parents might not normally consider. When picking out a simple wood projects for kids, consider the following:

How much time are you going to spend helping the child complete the project? If the child is young or the supervising adult does not have a lot of time to help build the project, then choose a simple woodworking project plan, or better yet, choose a pre-cut wooden dollhouse kit.

Several companies make excellent dollhouse kits that require simple assembly with glue. Once the dollhouse is assembled your child can show off their artistic side by deciding what color to paint the interior or exterior. Dollhouses are some of the easiest wood projects kids can build.

Note: Children require adult supervision when working with any type of glue or tools and should never be left unsupervised.

If you and your kids plan on making this adventure a bonding experience, pick a simple wood projects for kids that is still fun, but slightly more challenging. Some examples of wood projects that your kids might want to try are: a toy box, a music box, a jewelry box, a classic pony rocker, a rocking horse, a flag case, birdhouse, wagon or chessboard to name a few. There are excellent plans available and some of the woodworking hardware kits even include free woodworking plans.

Some larger simple wood projects for kids to also consider building are:

bunk beds, a cradle, or a backyard playhouse. The backyard playhouse is my personal favorite because it will take a little time to build, the kids will help build it, and then they will spend hours and hours enjoying it while the weather is nice outside.

For girls (or for fathers / grandfathers to build and give as a gift to his daughter / granddaughter) my favorites are the dollhouse kits. If you are a father or grandfather and you build one of the wooden dollhouse kits with your daughter or granddaughter, I assure you she will treasure it always. Boys may find a mail truck bank kit or a buckboard wagon kit fun to build from wood.

So remember, when picking simple wood projects for kids;

keep your time commitment to helping them complete the project in mind, keep the wood project related to something the child finds interesting, and last but not least, keep it fun.
